Studies on Electrokinetic Basis of Micturition Phenomena

Abstract

It has been proposed that micturition phenomena in biological systems can be explained in terms of electrokinetic phenomena. Electrokinetic studies include measurements of hydrodynamic permeability, electro-osmotic permeability, electro-osmotic pressure, streaming potential and streaming current respectively. In other words interaction of hydrostatic pressure and electrical potential across urinary bladder membranes give rise to micturition waves. Thus effective functioning of the bladder depends upon proper generation of waves and so factors on which electrokinetic phenomena depend have been studied in detail. Inefficient functioning of the bladder may lead to several complications with particular reference to formation of stones and so factors leading to formation of stones have also been discussed. Methodology of non-equilibrium thermodynamics have been used to explain such behaviour.
